TROMPE L’OEIL

Trompe l’oeil (‘trump loy’ French ‘for fool the eye’) is a painting technique used to create realistic looking images. Used extensively by master artists such as Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel to paint moldings, columns and other architectural elements. Trompe l’oeil creates the illusion of depth with shadows and hi-lights. In general, two styles of tromp l’oeil exist in decorative painting, the French and Italian style.

Two schools of tromp l’oeil:

• French Style trompe l’oeil is very precise and accurate. A two-dimensional painting done in the French style can look three-dimensional from just a couple feet away from it’s viewer. In general much of the trompe l’oeil in boringwalls.com is done in the French style. The effect is stunning and very impressive.

• Italian Style trompe l’oeil can be more dramatic, looser and more decorative. It’s illusion is lost from close distances but has quick visual impact upon first site and further distances.
