PATINAS

HISTORICAL USE

Traditionally the word refers to the natural aging of metals such as bronze and copper. Modern day metal workers will add patinas to newly made objects to simulate this antiquing process. The word Patina is also used to describe the decorative aging by glaze, used by painters. Adding an aged effect over plaster or molding can also be considered a patina, this offers immediate antiquing replacing the need to wait for the desired look. Patinas are also used quite frequently for aging gilding, accentuating relief and other decorative details. Currently decorative patinas, such as blended glazes, are very popular.

Aged patinas are often

result of dust, smoke, or humidity stains,
the first step of most faux finishes,
a thin layer of paint, and can be
an opaque or transparent crackle.

Decorative Patinas are

Glazing finishes referring to all decorative effects

Such as ragging,
Sponging,
Stippling,
Spattering.

Not aimed to imitate any existing natural finishes,
Used to change a basecoats appearance,
To make more interesting,
To give depth, or
To modify a color.

Textured or raised patinas are

Old plaster walls,
Rolled or applied with a trowel, and
Finished with a glazed patina.
