FAUX LEATHER

HISTORICAL USE

Popularized during the renaissance, leather has long been used as a decorative interior finish, often in the form of Cardova leather. Between the 16th and 18th century, gilt (gold leafed) leather wall coverings ordained the walls of the wealthy. Extremely rare today, gilt leather walls were at one time common in Castles as well as homes. Traditionally these leathers were covered in silver leaf and coated with an aging patina, creating the look of gold, rather than using actual gold. Today, faux finishing allows the recreation of such finishes. Using modern materials, we have the option of either painting, or gold leafing textures similar to leather. Options range from non-textured painted leather, to smooth Venetian leather, and textured cowhide leather. The size of each piece of leather should be no more than a few feet wide, thus panels are pieced together to cover an entire wall. The result is organic, masculine and very rich.
